Chailey Rural District was formed in 1894 following the passing of the Local Government Act of that year. It was located to the north of Newhaven (off the map) and Newhaven Rural District. The municipal borough of Lewes was on its southern border and, for a time, Chailey Rural District contained parishes which were the rural holdings of the former ecclesiastical parishes of Lewes.

As urbanization increased over the early 20th century, the makeup of the rural district changed. In 1934 parts of Ditchling and Wivelsfield parishes were transferred to the newly established urban district of Burgess Hill and a further part of Wivelsfield was transferred to Cuckfield. Parts of the parishes of Lewes St. Ann Without, Lewes St. John Without, South Malling Without, and Southover Without were absorbed into Lewes Municipal Borough. At the same time Newhaven Rural District was abolished and its northern and eastern parishes were transferred to Chailey Rural District. (See map on Newhaven Rural District page.)

In 1974, with the introduction of non-metropolitan districts and the division of Sussex into East and West Sussex, most of Chailey Rural District was transferred to the Lewes District in East Sussex.
