A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Carrycoats from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"CARY-COATS, a township in Thockrington parish, Northumberland; 6½ miles ESE of Bellingham. Acres: 1,799. Population: 41. Houses: 9."

Carrycoats was a township in the ancient parish of Thockrington and became a separate civil parish in 1866. From 1894 it was part of Bellingham Rural District. In 1955 the civil parish was abolished and the area was absorbed into the parish of Birtley.
