Carlton is now a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. It was built up on coking and coal mining industries and now has one of the largest industrial estates within the surrounding area. In the industrial estate lies a glass recycling plant, called Rexam. The village has two Church of England churches and a Methodist chapel.

Carlton is situated between the villages of Athersley and Royston, and between 1894 and 1938 was a civil parish in the Barnsley Rural District. In 1938 it was absorbed by the County Borough of Barnsley, and subsequently in 1974 into the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England.

Before 1866 it was in the ancient and ecclesiastical parish of Royston in the wapentake of Staincross.
