The new parish of Bwlchgwyn was formed by an Order in Council on 5 March 1880, from a portion of the parish of Brymbo, and a small part of the parish of Llanfynydd (in Flintshire) it is a small village approximately 6 miles west of Wrexham and 12 miles from Chester. Bwlchgwyn is the highest village in Wales and, for those with a geological interest, has rich mineral deposits as evidenced by the number of quarries in the village. Evidence of Roman occupation has been found in Nant y Ffrith valley.
