Glascote is an area of Tamworth in Staffordshire, England. The area centres on the Glascote Road. According to the 2001 census the population for Glascote was 8,344.

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Bolehall and Glascote from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"BOLEHALL and GLASCOTE, a township in Tamworth parish, Warwick[shire]; in the south-eastern outskirts of Tamworth town and borough. Real property: £7,081. Population: 1,191. Houses: 252."

Glascote was originally a township named Bolehall and Glascote and, until 1866, was part of the civil parish of Tamworth, Staffordshire, located on its southern side in the county of Warwickshire. It was made a separate civil parish in 1866 and remained so until 1965. In 1890 it was made part of Tamworth Municipal Borough, but was transferred (minus an area of 270 houses) to Tamworth Rural District when the rural district was established in 1894. In 1932 it lost another section (555 acres, approximately 2500 people) to Tamworth, and in 1965 it was entirely abolished and absorbed into Tamworth. At this point its name was changed from Bolehall and Glascote to Glascote. (Source: A Vision of Britain through Time)

The website is very useful for finding the ecclesiastical individual parishes within large cities and towns.

Descriptions provided are usually based on a gazetteer of 1870-72 which often provides brief notes on the economic basis of the settlement and significant occurences through its history.
  • The two maps below indicate the boundaries between parishes, etc., but for a more detailed view of a specific area try a map from this selection. The oldest series are very clear at the third magnification offered. Comparing the map details with the GENUKI details for the same area is well worthwhile.
