Bishopthorpe Rural District was situated in the West Riding of Yorkshire from 1894 to 1937. The rural district was formed under the Local Government Act 1894 from that part of the York Rural Sanitary District which was in the West Riding. It was abolished in 1937 by a County Review Order. The majority of the civil parishes went to the county borough of York, with two becoming part of the Tadcaster Rural District in the West Riding. Since 1974 the whole of Bishopthorpe Rural District has been transferred to North Yorkshire, under the City of York unitary authority and the Selby District. [edit] Civil Parishes
