Bentley was originally a township in the West Riding of Yorkshire about 1-1/2 miles north of the town of Doncaster.

In 1866 it was grouped in a civil parish with the neighbouring parish of Arksey. Information on the period following 1866 will be found on the page for Bentley with Arksey. As Doncaster became more urbanized, Bentley was drawn into the core of the town.
