History

the text in this section is based on an article in Wikipedia in 2018, the local parish website, and map examination

At the time of the Domesday Book of 1086, Beetley was part of the Manor of Elmham, held by William Beaufoe, Bishop of Thetford, with the name deriving from the two Anglo Saxon words "betel" and "bietel", both words applying to a clearing where wooden mallets are made. Beetley was then part of the Parish of Bittering Magna (Great Bittering), however the Parish divided into Beetley to the north and Gressenhall to the south with the manor of Great Bittering remaining in Beetley. (This appears to have happened with a local Enclosure Act of 1774.)

Beetley includes the ancient parish of Great Bittering (redirected here), while the ancient parish of Little Bittering merged with Beeston to make Beeston with Bittering.

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Beetley from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1871-72:

"BEETLEY, a parish in Mitford [registration] district, Norfolk; 2 miles WSW of Elmham [railway] station, and 4 N by W of East Dereham. Post Town, Elmham, under Thetford. Acres: 1,770. Real property: £2,870. Population: 363. Houses: 82. The property is divided among a few. The living is a rectory, annexed to the rectory of East Bilney, in the diocese of Norwich. The church is good."

  • Ancestry.co.uk has the following lists as of 2018 (UK or worldwide Ancestry membership or library access required). With the exception of the index to wills these files are browsible images of the original documents. The files are separated by type and broken down into time periods (i.e., "Baptism, Marriages, and Burials, 1535-1812" is more than one file). The general explanatory notes are worth reading for those unfamiliar with English parish records.
