Ashwaubenon takes its name from Chief Ashwaubamy, a Sioux chief that controlled the land and resources in the area in the early 1880s. Eventually the US Military bought most of the west side of Green Bay, Wisconsin from the Sioux in the 1850s and 60's, except the area that would later become Ashwaubenon. That land still belonged to Chief Ashwaubamy's two daughters until they began selling it to local farmers and landowners in the late 19th century. [edit] Research Tips
