Ardsley (near Barnsley) is a small village about 3 miles (4.8 km) east of Barnsley and forms part of the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley of South Yorkshire, England. Before 1974 it was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire.
Ardsley was originally a township in the ancient parish of Darfield in the Staincross Wapentake of the West Riding of Yorkshire. It became a civil parish in 1866 and was established as an urban district in 1894. In 1897 it was enlarged by the addition of the neighbouring Monk Bretton civil parish. In 1921 the urban district was abolished and the area was absorbed into Barnsley Municipal Borough, the forerunner of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough.
