Alderford is a village and civil parish in Norfolk, England, about ten miles (16 km) northwest of Norwich.

The civil parish has an area of 1.80 square kilometres and in 2001 had a population of 43 in 16 households. At the 2011 Census the population remained less than 100 and thus was counted with the neighbouring civil parish of Swannington. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the Broadland District.

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Alderford from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1871-72:

"ALDERFORD, a parish in St. Faith [registration] district, Norfolk; on the river Wensum, 9 miles NNE of Thuxton [railway] station, and 10 NW of Norwich. It has a post office under Norwich. Acres: 432. Real property: £838. Population: 29. Houses: 5. The manor belonged anciently to Norwich cathedral. The living is a rectory, united with the vicarage of Attlebridge, in the diocese of Norwich. Value: £219. Patrons: the Dean and Chapter of Norwich. The church is old but good."

Research Tips

  • Ancestry.co.uk has the following lists as of 2018 (UK or worldwide Ancestry membership or library access required). With the exception of the index to wills these files are browsible images of the original documents. The files are separated by type and broken down into time periods (i.e., "Baptism, Marriages, and Burials, 1535-1812" is more than one file). The general explanatory notes are worth reading for those unfamiliar with English parish records.
