http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/13449 A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Alcester from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"ALCESTER, a liberty in the parish of St. James Shaftesbury, within the parliamentary borough of Shaftesbury, but without the municipal borough, Dorset. Population, 342. Houses, 76."

Alcester was a civil parish in it own right 1894-1921 located in Shaftesbury Rural District. In 1921 it was abolished and absorbed into the civil parish of Shaftesbury.
