The parish of Abbotrule was abolished in 1777, when it was split between the parishes of Southdean and Hobkirk. Until 1975 there was a parish in Roxburghshire named Southdean and Abbotrule.

GENUKI quotes:

"A parish in Roxburghshire, lately suppressed and divided between the parishes of Bedrule and Southdean."
from Gazetteer of Scotland published 1806, Edinburgh.

Scottish Places provides this description of the present hamlet:

"The hamlet of Abbotrule is located on the Forderlee Burn, 2 miles (3 km) northeast of the village of Bonchester Bridge and 8 miles (12 km) northeast of Hawick in the Scottish Borders. The ruins of a church lie to the southeast of Abbotrule. This hamlet was once within the Abbotrule Estate, an estate which extended to 960 ha (2348 acres) in size."

In a further quote from from the Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland: A Survey of Scottish Topography, Statistical, Biographical and Historical, edited by Francis H. Groome between 1882 and 1885, Scottish Places states that Abbotrule was divided equally between Southdean and Hobkirk.
