Civil War [23 July 2011]

Which regiment did Thomas Hall serve in? We're trying to mark all of the Civil War veterans here on WeRelate. Thanks! --Amy (Ajcrow) 08:16, 23 July 2011 (EDT)

To the best of my knowledge, Thomas Hall did not serve when they called him to in Jay co., Indiana. The History of Jay Co book states that he sent in an alternate, but I do not know for sure who that alternate was. It may have been his brother Amos, who served in the 130th Reg. along with many of their Redkey townsfolk. Do you know if it is possible to find out why he decided to send an alternate and who was chosen? I am in the process of updating much of this information on this family, bit by bit, as I verify the sources, so the info is constantly evolving. --Cos1776 11:04, 23 July 2011 (EDT)
Unless you find something written by him, it would be almost impossible to say *why* he sent an alternate. There are numerous reasons: he didn't have anyone to help run the farm; he didn't approve of the war; he was a pacifist; he was afraid, etc. Many men opted not to go because of the economic hardship it would have placed on their family. If he was drafted, there might be records with the Indiana Adjutant General's office. (I'm not sure where those records are.) Those draft records often listed the man drafted and the name of the man who went in his place. Good luck! Amy (Ajcrow) 13:48, 23 July 2011 (EDT)
