Person talk:Samuel Case (4)

The children of Samuel Case [2 March 2015]

The births of ten of Samuel's children from his first marriage (to Mary Westover) are recorded in the Simsbury vital records; nine (Samuel, Mary, Hannah, Mercy, Abigail, Nathaniel, Eunice, Eleazer, and Jonas) on page 6 of the reverse side of Vol. 1 of the land records; one (Azrikam) on page 260 of the third volume of town records. Four more are named by Savage (Josiah, Caleb, Benjamin and Peletiah), but it appears that Josiah is almost certainly identical to Jonas although their identified dates of births are one year apart. Irene, recorded on page 253 of the third volume of town records is the only known child of Samuel's second marriage (to Elizabeth [Owen] Thrall).

Of the children named above, all except Eleazer, Josiah (who probably did not exist) and Benjamin are named in the final distribution of Samuel's estate in 1729/30. Benjamin, however, had been mentioned, in a court document of November 1725, as selecting his brother Samuel as guardian. The conclusion is that in addition to the twelve children named in the final distribution, Eleazer and Benjamin were deceased at that time and Josiah never existed, that name being confused with Jonas.--jaques1724 00:20, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
