Ancestral File Number [19 February 2014]

What is the general consensus on using Ancestral File Numbers, particularly in situations where sources are reasonably well documented on WR? I have mixed emotions about their value on a page like Nathaniel Ford (1). Delete or keep is the question.--Frank 17:04, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

If there's sources to justify the data, then it probably isn't needed and so you can choose what you want to do. Many people do delete them. I used to leave them as harmless, but now tend to delete them. If there aren't sources, it may indicate where the data comes from, which can be useful for knowing it is not really credible, since they are very poor sources at best, often laughable (example, example, example, plenty more where that comes from), really in the class of sources like GED and FTW and unsourced websites, which people also generally remove. I also know they have been renumbered, and they may actually be useless if you can't find the specific AFN with it. I have had mixed luck finding some of them, but that could be pilot error on my part: it is never critical enough to really pursue it. --Jrich 17:36, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

I only occasionally find them useful. I'm not married to their presence.--Neal Gardner 19:03, 19 February 2014 (UTC)
