Sources need to provide enough information that others can easily find the same information. For example, simply citing "Vital Record", even specifying the county in which the vital record was obtained, is not adequate. That vital record normally is found in a particular county record book (e.g, Probate and Estate Record(., and the specific name and volume in which the record was found should be noted.

Also, citations should not be ambiguous. For example, citing "Vital Record. Final Settlement, Jefferson County", is not clear. Perhaps what was meant was an estate Final Settlement, but it could be in reference to other matters, not necessarily genealogical in nature. This "Final Settlement in Jefferson County refers to something wholly unrelated to Mary Ritchie, but is a contemporary court action in Jefferson County, Missouri. Citations need to provide sufficient information to unambiguously point the reader to the original source being cited. Q 07:48, 1 May 2013 (EDT)
