GED-065 Source: Hedger Binder A-1,31,114,115 A-114 Photo of tombstone of John Hedger, found in Swiggett Cemetery at New Salem,IL. I first saw this stone when it was still standing, but tilted backward. The stone read JOHN HEDGER, died Feb. 4, 1861. Ten years later I visited the cemetery again, and found the stone had fallen flat and exposed two more lines: Aged 61 years, 8 days. The photo was taken in 1989 when I last visited New Salem. The bottom line reads: Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted. John and several members of his family came as early pioneers to Clermont County, Ohio, arriving when John was still a very young man. A-115 John and Mary were members of the Methodist church when they lived in Miami Twp. in Clermont County, Ohio. By 1830, John's brother, Joseph Hedger, moved to Pike Co.,IL. and sent back good reports of how reasonably good fertile land could be purchased. John went to visit Joseph and returned to Ohio to bring his family. When they moved to Pike Co.,IL they brought John's father, and his brother, William. They also brought Mary's mother, Mrs. Esther (Mattocks) Salter as Esther had been living with them after the death of Mary's father. It would have been a pleasant reunion, but after convincing John to settle in Pike County, Joseph decided to go west. John and Mary lived out their lives in the sleepy little town of New Salem in Pike Co.,IL. When he died on 4 Feb 1861, he was buried on the farm of Nathan Swiggett who was the father-in-law of John's son, John C.Hedger. This plot of land on the Swiggett farm was converted to the Swiggett Cemetery and was deeded to the town of New Salem by Nathan's widow, Margaret (English) Swiggett. It was named Swiggett Cemetery as a monument to Nathan Swiggett and because the whole cemetery was to be his monument, Margaret did not put a stone on his grave. Today no one knows where Nathan is buried and a few associate the name of the cemetery with the family, the only stone in the cemetery bearing the Swiggett name being that of a grandchild who was a daughter of a brother to Nancy (Swiggett) Hedger. All the children of John & Mary were raised to be staunch Methodists, a religious preference which carried over for several generations. Many of the family intermarried with other members of the Methodist Church in Pike County and their desscendants continue to follow that faith.
