The Confusion about Hannah (a summation)

The match-and-merge process resulted in a great deal of confusion about this Hannah, but it is slowly getting sorted out. This has also been a great example of the importance of close attention to sources, including comparing sources that appear to conflict with each other. Some things we learned in the process of cleaning up her record:

1. She was daughter of Henry Brookes of Woburn NOT of Thomas Brookes of Concord. (Thomas is identified as "uncle" in the will of her first husband, Thomas Fox. See TF will.

2. She did not die in the 1650s, but much later. It was her first husband, Thomas Fox, who died in 1658. Citation needed

3. She had several children by Thomas Fox. But his children, Eliphalet and Elizabeth were by his first wife.

4. We're still pulling together the sources, but it looks like after Thomas died, she moved to Connecticut and remarried there:

a. m. 1661 in New London Andrew Lester; he died in 1669.Citation needed
b. m. abt 1671 in New London Isaac Wiley; he died in 1685.Citation needed

Good Sources for Information About Hannah

My interest is in the Hannah married to Thomas Fox, for that is my line. I agree that she is likely not the one married to Andrew Lester and Isaac Willey. I hadn't thought that one through before. Is there enough evidence that she was married to Thomas Fox and therefore the daughter of Thomas Brooks?--Hassell47 16:54, 1 December 2008 (EST)

I have seen several places that Hannah was mistakenly identified as dau of Thomas, but that she is dau of Henry who mentions her in his will. Thomas and Henry may be brothers or at least 1st cousins. DNA Testing shows a close relationship. See [[1]]I have Thomas Fox d 14 apr, 1658.

From there I found:

"Appears on charts: Descendants of Henry1w Brooks

Descendants of Hannah/2w Brooks

Hannah/2w Brooks was born in England, probably by 1622 (estimated from the birth dates of her children), and emigrated to New England with her family.3

13. [S36] Savage, 2:477.

Caulkins also mentions, without a date, the baptism of "Widow Lester from the church at Concord," by Rev. Simon Bradstreet Jr., who was New London's minister from 1670-1683.14

According to Savage, she died without children before her father Thomas (1667). Shattuck says she was the 2d wife of Thomas Fox, with issue through one son, Eliphalet, and descendants in New Hampshire. Both are incorrect. Eliphalet was Thomas Fox's son by his 1st wife Rebecca.16,17"

If Hannah is the daughter of Henry Brooks, who was her mother?--Hassell47 20:11, 1 December 2008 (EST)

The name of Henry's first wife remains unknown, she died before 1651 when he married Susan Bradford, widow of Ezekiel Richardson. She died 15 sep 1681. Henry married 3rd Annis Jordon, widow of Abraham Jaquith. The sources listed on the above website need checking. The Barbour collection must contain Hannah's 2nd and 3rd marriages.--Scot 20:45, 1 December 2008 (EST)

Next Steps

While it now seems clear that Hannah, widow of Thomas Fox Sr (who died 1658 in Concord), was not the daughter of Thomas Brooks, I'm still uncomfortable with the link to the New London CT Hannah who marries Lester and Willey. We need to nail that proof down.

I'm also concerned why Henry Brooks would name his daughter "Lester" if by then Hannah Lester had married Willey.

Will of Henry Brooks [2 December 2008]

[moved to Henry Brooks' page] -- jillaine 09:41, 2 December 2008 (EST)

Here we will simply state that Henry and Thomas Brooks were most likely 1st cousins, grandsons of the aforementioned Richard Brooke. Previously, the evidence for such a close connection was found in the will of Henry's son-in-law Thomas Fox, which speaks of "uncle Thomas Brooks," and in the fact that Thomas's son Joshua was living at Henry's son Isaac's place at Concord, MA, in 1666.6,7,4--Scot 22:10, 1 December 2008 (EST)

25 Jan 1657/58, Thomas ffoxe of Concord made his will, and, though "feble & weake in body," signed it in his own hand, "his name appearing neat and legible." He named his wife Hannah executor, leaving her control of his estate until his son Eliphalet shall reach the age of 21, at which time Eliphalet shall have two-thirds of the estate (his mother retaining one-third during her life) on condition of payment of £5 to each of his siblings. Daughter Elizabeth is the only other child identified by name. The testator names loving uncle Thomas Brooks, loving brethren Moses Wheate (probable brother-in-law) and (brother-in-law) Thomas Bateman, and loving friend and neighbor Robert Fletcher to be overseers.10

Henry Bond's Incorrect Theory about Hannah (Brooks) Fox [2 December 2008]

Bond in his "Family Memorials: Genealogies of the Families and Descendants of the Early Settlers of Watertown," page 720, says this:

"Chil. of Capt. Thomas and Grace Brooks: .... 5.? Hannah, m. Dec. 13, 1647, Thomas Fox. [See Fox, Part II.]

p. 765:

Fox. -- Thomas Fox, m., Ap. 24, 1683, Elizabeth, wid. of Charles Chadwich (who d. Ap. 10, 1682). She d. Feb. 22, 1684/5, aged 70. Thomas Fox was Rep. of Wat., 1688, and "Father Fox," was chosen tythingman, 9 months after the above marriage. Mr. Shattuck, p. 371, says Thomas Fox, Sen., d. Ap. 14, 1658. It seems to me [Bond] more probably that it was the son Thomas, who d. at that time; and that Thomas Fox, sen., was the "Father Fox" who m. widow Chadwick. From the age of the bride (aged 69) we infer that he was an old man. It is conjectured, that his 2d wife, Hannah, was a daughter of Capt. THOMAS Brooks, that she and her son Thomas, and probably her daughter, died before her ather, and is not therefore, metioned in the settlement of his estate. We insert the little we have gleaned, with respect to the family of Thomas ox, of Concord, accompanied with our conjectures, to be confirmed or confuted by others.

Thomas Fox, m. (1st) Rebecca ____. She d. May 11, 1647, and he m. (2d) Dec. 13, 1647, Hannah Brooks. As the birth of no child of hers is recorded after 1650, she probably died soon, and before her supposed father, Capt. [Thomas] Brooks. He m (3d) Ellen, wid. of Pereival Green of Camb., where he settled, and was a member of the church as early as 1658, and was this year selectman. She d. in Camb. May 27, 1682, aged 82 years, ten months before he m. to wid. E. Chadwick. He d. in Camb. Ap. 25, 1693, ae 86. [See Camb. Epitaph.]--jillaine 21:10, 1 December 2008 (EST)
