Person talk:Gerrard Staal (1)

Who was Gerrard's First Wife? [24 November 2012]

The question has me completely stumped. We know her Americanized name was Jennie, and we have her death certificate. Her father's name is there, but illegible.

I think is Harm vander Veen, but I'm not sure about the last 2 letters, her mothres name should be Afke--henk 05:43, 24 November 2012 (EST)

We know from the [1900 census] that she emigrated in 1868 and married Gerard about 1876. We believe that she is the mother, and Gerrard the stepfather, of Esther Staal, who seems to show up in the 1880 census as [Easi Nannenga]. Her first husband must have been Nannenga, and he must have died right around 1875. I don't see Esther's birth registry, but this seems to be her sister; alas the first name of her father Nannenga is also unrecognizably garbled.

P.S. Is there a preferred way to include a reference to an image, in contrast to including the image itself?

My move of desperation may have led to a breakthrough. I decided to go with the birthdate on the death certificate and list all of the Jantje's in AlleGroningers sorted by date. There is precisely one match. Which wouldn't be that convincing, except that the match is precisely the sister of his second wife.

The identity of her first husband Nanninga is still obscure.

Did Garret die in 1927? [24 November 2012]

That looks very plausible. Unfortunately, that's probably just past the end of the online death certificate archive. I might have hoped also to find Bouwke in Oakwood Cemetery, but I don't see her. (Maybe she remarried.) --Pkeegstra 09:55, 24 November 2012 (EST)
