Person talk:Geert Hellinga (6)

Name [17 October 2011]

Hello Revsma3, are you sure Geert's name was Geert Harkes? According to Dutch naming practices, he would be called Geert Geerts.--Jennifer (JBS66) 10:18, 15 October 2011 (EDT)

He talked very little about his past and now all that I could've gotten information from are deceased. His mother's name fits the name my mother mentioned and the oldest girl was named the same as Minke. I haven't heard about the names being doubled like that but that doesn't mean you're not correct. I'm going to have to keep looking and looking and looking but thanks for the tip!--EJHellingaHellengaKnaack 20:58, 16 October 2011 (EDT)

Since the name of Geert's father was also Geert, the son would have taken his father's name as a patronymic name. So, his name Geert Geerts Hellinga means Geert, son of Geert. His father's name was Geert Harkes, so that means his father's name would be Harke. I'll add a few more details on this family from the Frisian end (ie birth dates and parents). If any more members of this family settled in Illinois, and you have information on them, it would be great if you could add that to their pages! If you ever have questions on researching in Friesland, let me know :) --Jennifer (JBS66) 11:39, 17 October 2011 (EDT)

my latest challenge :-):

You're not related to the Hellingas from Giekerk or the Terpstras from that area, too, are you? That would be Harke Hellinga and Samual Terpstra or his dad, Michael. It could also be Gerrit instead of Harke. I'm trying to find relatives to visit before we fly over there in April. So far no luck.--henk 06:13, 21 December 2012 (EST)
