On Guam known as Galo Bouma Kamminga:

My name is Lorie Kamminga - Foster from Guam. My great grandfather, Galo Bouma Kamminga was born in 1843 and came to Guam with his brother, John Bouma Kamminga. There is not much that our great grandfather's shared with us, but there are many references to fishing, whaling and the "Flying Dutchman." This has been a mystery for the families here on Guam. If you can shed light on this subject, the Kamminga descendants would be grateful for any assistance. If you are a descendant from this Guam family (Herrero-Kamminga AND Roberto-Kamminga) please let me know because I am putting the tree together. My father Anthony Kamminga passed away on June 3, 2012 and I have always, always been interested in finding the family of my beloved father and even more so now. Please help us! Regards, Lorie

I'm 90 % sure this the the searched Galo Kamminga To be 100 % sure research has to be done at ships records--henk 14:12, 3 July 2012 (EDT)

My Aunt Thea is the official historian of the Boumas. I'll ask her if she knows about this. --Pkeegstra 18:04, 3 July 2012 (EDT)

Searching for the 100% I received a e-mail. I will translate it one of these days but it it is certainm that the eldest son Ymke (or maybe John) was a sailor in 1860, so 80 % sure is now 90% sure. I have to visit the Harlinger archives to find out if Gaele and Ymke were both sailors--henk 13:21, 10 July 2012 (EDT)

Hannemahuis [11 July 2012]

I was hoping to find information about Ymke and Gaele Kamminga in the Population Census of Harlingen, particularly about a departure to another place, but no.

Ymke and Gaele Kamminga were sons of Simon Ymkes Kamminga (b. Harlingen 03.01.1817), cooper by profession, and Lolkje Gaeles Bouma. Gaele Kamminga was born in Harlingen in district A, No. 152 (now Zoutsloot 45). The sons are named after their grandfathers: Ymke to his paternal grandfather, Gaele to his maternal grandfather. In 1848 they lived on Zoutsloot 100/102. When their brother Hessel died at the age of 1 on 09/23/1848 Simon Ymkes Kamminga was warehouseman. On 3/12/1852 father Simon Ymkes Kamminga married for the 2nd time, with Jetske Sjollema (b Lemmer 06/07/1812). The Harlingen Population 1851-1860, Section C, page 160 shows that they lived on the Noorderhaven (C-162). The Census 1860-1880, Part K, page 6, shows that in 1860, son Ymke was sailor by profession. son Gaele was 16 then, no occupation mentioned. Father Simon was in that period a professional warehouseman. His second wife Jetske Sjollema died March 24, 1866. On 9/20/1866 married Simon Ymkes Kamminga for the third time, with Saakje Johannes van der Veer. With her he had a daughter Saakje, Harlingen born July 8, 1867. The Census 1880-1900, Part K, page 6, shows that Simon Ymkes Kamminga was for the third time widowed. He was a clerk by profession and lived alone with his daughter Saakje at different addresses, until his daughter Saakje died on 18/12/1881. Then Simon moved to the Reformed Parish Home (for old men). I cannot find data in the Census of both sons Ymke and Gaele Kamminga The latest data about them are from the Population 1860-1880. I have searched in the Register of the School of Mathematics and Maritime Engineering 1842-1910. in the years 1856-1874, but their names are not found. There may be information about them to be found in the muster rolls 1861-1924 in the Archives of the water bailiff in Harlingen. The muster rolls are digitalized d and accessible on DVD in the Municipal Archives Harlingen, location Hannemahuis, Front Street 56. Unfortunately there is not yet access with surnames. You can make an appointment in advance if you want to come and see. The Municipal is open Tuesday / Friday 13.30-17.00 hrs. New information about Gaele Kamminga [11 July 2012]

Dear mister Smidtman, On the website of the CBG (Central Bureau for Genealogy) in The Hague I found interesting information about Gaele Kamminga. Geale Kamminga occurs in the General Police Journal, 1865, page 100. He was 20 years old, last seen on board of the Dutch ship Caspar de Robles, skipper TW van Slooten, and was wanted by the police because he had deserted the ship during the voyage. The Central Bureau of Genealogy in The Hague has the 1852-1946 volumes of the General Police leaf. It contains monitoring reports (e.g. suspects, convicts, deserted, missing), data on victims (of crime), dilated and allowed foreigners and police (recruitment, promotion, compensation, pitches). The CBG is working on a long term project of digitization and access to personal name of this series. At present this is the result of the name you have entered. You can view the corresponding pages in the CBG and print them. General Police Journal, 1865, pg. 84, No 119: Gaele Kamminga, Harlingen born October 31, 1844. General Police Journal, 1865, page 100, No 168: Kamminga, G., 20 years old, inexperienced sailor, born and residing in Harlingen, 1.4 meter long, round forehead, hair blond, eyebrows light blonde, blue eyes, nose and mouth normal, chin round, healthy color. Last seen on board of the Dutch ship Caspar de Robles, skipper van Slooten. These 15 persons in various judgments of the tribunal-court to Rotterdam, from January 24 this year, in respect of deserting the ship during the journey, up to 3 months imprisonment. The prosecutor in Rotterdam invites exploration, retention planning and sending him back. General Police Journal, 1877, page 91: G. Kamminga, page 100, No 165-168. (refer to previous paragraph). Hoping to serve you, Sincerely,--henk 05:52, 11 July 2012 (EDT)

ship caspar de Robles [11 July 2012]

I became curious myself Gaele Kamminga and looked in the Archives of the Water mayor of Harlingen in the registers of embarkation on the seagoing period 1860-1866 in the hope to find f a ship named Caspar di Robles with Captain Thomas Hielkes van Slooten (b 02/10/1832 Harlingen, Harlingen died 06/12/1881) and the rest of the crew encounter, but alas. In "Sailing vessels visiting the port of Harlingen 1818-1918, with steam ships 1843-1964 ', by GN Bouma, two ships are listed with the name Caspar di Robles: on page 43 the two-masted schooner Caspar di Robles, built in 1851 in Harlingen, was captain OS Parma, owned by Sailmakers & Co. in Harlingen. On page 76 is another ship named Caspar di Robles stated, a Bark, built in 1864 in Brake, skipper T. van Slooten, owner Sailmakers & Co. in Harlingen. I think Gaele Kamminga deserted of the latter ship looking at the captain’s name. Thomas Hielkes van Slooten, 25-years age sea captain by profession. That is stated in his marriage. He married, 25 years old, in Harlingen on 8-4-858 Antje Blijstra. Through the website http://kranten.kb.nl/ historical newspapers and in the search field type in "Caspar Robles Slooten, you will find entries (ship tidings) of arrival, departure and supercargo lists and ads from the (fast sailing) ship Caspar di Robles under the authority of TH van Slooten. Then you will see that the ship sailed between Amsterdam and Suriname (Nickerie) back and forth food including sugar and rum and took this cargo to the Netherlands, and Porto Cabello, Laguayra, and in 1867 from Maracaibo to Hamburg

It looks that Gaele sailed in 1864 with this ship to Suriname, deserted there (or maybe in Gibraltar, or Triest ) and sailed to Guam. Curious when he arrived in Guam--henk 09:10, 11 July 2012 (EDT)
