Person talk:Elizabeth Unknown (2279)

From Elizabeth Tilden (13): Wrong parents [23 June 2010]

There is no evidence that Person:Nathaniel Tilden (1) had a daughter Elizabeth. Specifically his will of 1641 does not mention her. She was married to William in the land division of 1627 but Nathaniel did not come to New England until 1635. Source:Winsor, Justin. History of the Town of Duxbury, Massachusetts, with Genealogical Registers says William Bassett m. Elizabeth Tilden, but annotates this with a question mark. Source:Haxtun, Annie Arnoux. Signers of the Mayflower Compact suggests her father was Thomas Tilden. But her argument is very circumstantial. It is based on Thomas Tilden getting 3 shares in 1623 Land Division, but no person named Tilden mentioned participated in the 1627 Cattle Division. But this only shows that possibly Thomas Tilden brought children, and there is no proof that he had a daughter named Elizabeth, nor that she is the one who married William Bassett. In fact, since William Bassett got 2 shares in 1623, she would not even have been one of the 3 Tilden shares if she was the one who married William Bassett. In addition, the fact that William's second wife's maiden name was Tilden may account for some of the confusion.
