Finding the Netherlands Birth Record [22 May 2012]

Here are the four known bits of documentation for August Van Strat:

• 1910 census (n.b. immigration year given as 1900)
• 1920 census (n.b. immigration year given as 1891 on Ancestry)
• 1930 census (n.b. immigration year given as 1900)
• WWII Draft Card (Netherlands listed as birthplace)

The family narrative may provide some additional clues. August Van Strat and his birth parents attempted to immigrate, but the father Van Strat died along the way and was buried at sea, and the family was turned back upon arrival at the US. His mother remarried a Mr. Van Den Berg and the second attempt at immigration (presumably in 1900) succeeded. (Perhaps 1891 was the year for the first immigration attempt.)

My source thought that both sides of her maternal family came from Zeeland, but the Zweerus side definitely came from Zuid-Holland. One possibility, then, is that the Van Strat side does come from Zeeland.

At first I thought it would be a hard 1. but with making a time table: 1887-1891-1900 and narrowing the searh criteria it became easy. I think he immigrated under the name vandenberg, groet van Henk --henk 05:28, 22 May 2012 (EDT)

Many thanks! I think I remember seeing Cornelius Vandenberg in the census, but I couldn't sort through all the Cornelis van den Bergs in GENLIAS to make the connection. It's interesting that the first son who is only in the 1910 census was named Hugestien after his grandfather. (Also, it was the FindAGrave for Maatje Leydens Sweerus which gave me the clues to work out the Zweerus side of my friend's family.) --Pkeegstra 06:53, 22 May 2012 (EDT)
