Person talk:Aeltje Braconie (1)

Aeltje and Eli Braconie [14 January 2013]

It has been suggested by Chris Chester that the name given as Eli Braconie as a witness to two New Amsterdam baptisms should be understood to yet another creative spelling of "Aeltje" and does not represent a second individual. Totten assumed that the name referred to a male and thus must be a relative of Aeltje Braconie. It is much more likely that it to Aeltje herself the name refers.

This means, however, that there was no one named Eli who was her father. Yet our page gives a possible wife for him without any reproducible source. Has anyone else come across the name of Aeltje's possible mother?--Renee Dauven 16:22, 13 January 2013 (EST)

I wonder if Person:Aeltje Braconie (1) and Person:Aeltye Brackunell (1) are mistakingly the same person. I found a few snippets of information:

"Aeltje had a brother, Eli Braconie, who was one of the sponsers at the baptism 6 January 1641 of Christiaen Bennet. Eli and the Governor of New Netherlands, Willem Kieft, were sponsers at the baptism of Marye Bennet on 9 March 1644, both grandchildren of Aeltje's, being children of her daughter, Mary Badie and Mary's second husband, Willem Adriaensz Bennet." from McVicar Post ancestry by Hugh D. Interesting snippet, Jennifer. I suppose that it is possible that "Eli" was a brother. I hadn't really thought of it.

The baptisms given above are the only two that are known to use the "Eli" name. The children are Aeltje's grandchildren. The mother of the children is Aeltje's only child. I think it is much more likely that the witness is Aeltje herself rather than her brother or her probably 80 year old father.

The marriage record is the one two her third and final husband. The first two marriage records have not yet been found.

Your suggestion that Aeltje Braconie (1) and Aeltye Brackunell (1) are actually the same person seems to be very plausible to me.
