Zenas should not be confused with several other men by this name about this time. Four served in the Revolutionary War: 1) a private in Capt Noah Allen's co, at Camp Ticonderoga, 2) a sergeant in Capt. John Collar's co in Berkshire, 3) a Captain 6th co., 1st Bershire Co. regt from New Marlboro who served 3 years, and 4) Zenas Jr, a private in St Samuel Warner's co. in Bennington. Another went to San Francisco where he was involved in gold mining and patented a machine for amalgamating gold and silver, and yet another was a deacon in Wolcott, MA.

The assumption that Zenas was s/o Zebediah & Mary comes from a misinterpretation of how he is presented in the Wheeler book. Number 17640 is not listed with Zebadiah's other two children, there is a blank line above Zenas' name to indicate a separate entry, and the font is smaller. In addition, he was born more than 70 years after Zebediah's other children.

Zenas jr was missing, and there was an extra female over 45 (possibly Zenas' mother or a servant; Shuah's mother died in 1794). They lived four houses from Samuel Whittemore (future father-in-law of daughter Shuah). Other Wheelers in Concord were Jeremiah and Benjamin.

1820 census, Concord, Rockingham County, NH - Zenas Wheeler with 1 male 10-15 (?), 1 male 16-18 (son Asa), 2 males 16-26 (son Asa again, son Uriah), and 1 male 45+ (himself), 2 females 16-26 (daughters Shuah, Sophia), and 2 females 45+ (wife Shuah, possibly his mother). Extras include a male 10-15 and female over 45. Other Wheelers in Concord were Benjamin, and two Jeremiahs.

Zenas and Shuah were not found in a search of all 41 pages of Concord, NH in the 1830 census, and He was likely the male 60-70 with his son-in-law Samuel WHITTEMORE on the 1830 census of Ellicott, Chautauqua County, NY. The William F and Zenas Wheeler in NYC may have been his sons, but the households don't match well with their families. None of the family appeared on the 1825 NY State census of Chautauqua county.

1835 NY state census, Chautauqua County - Zenas Wheeler with 1 male (himself) and 1 female (his wife) occupying 1 acre of improved land. He was two houses from William F (probably his son) and one house from son-in-law Samuel Whittemore.
