The story goes that Wilson Godwin was an orphan, and was adopted by the wealthy Alfred Oaks or Oakes. For Wilson's wedding to Artimisa, the couple was given some property and several slaves. At the start of the Civil War, they freed their slaves and Wilson went to fight for Illinois in the Union Army. His military records show that he was 6 ft. 2 inches, dark complexion, blue eyes and dark hair. He was captured and spent some time in a Confederate prison, and inaccurately reported as going AWOL. He was lucky enough to survive and return to his family after serving in the army.

His death certificate is not in Williamson Co.

20 Jan 1841, Sarah Godwin of Perry Co, IL sold 40 acres of land to Wilson for $50.

1860 Union Co. IL census shows that Wilson had 4 working oxen, 50 value of livestock, 7 irish potoato bushels, 15 sweet potato bushels, 1000 value of produce

12 Aug 1892 Wilson and Artimisa sold 160 acres of land in Johnson Co IL to Joseph Threet for $1850.
