Enlisted as a Private on 05 July 1861 at the age of 22 Enlisted in Company H, 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment Massachusetts on 05 July 1861 Accidentally killed on 01 August 1863 in Frederick, MD, when run over by a gun.

Andover VR lists cause of death as "killed by siege gun". List him as widower, his wife having died while he was away at war. His death is also listed in the North Andover VR, but he is called Aaron H. Wardwell.

His sister Charlotte is the beneficiary of his pension. Filed 29 January 1866

His name is on the headstone with his sister Mary in the West Parish Cemetery, but he is more likely buried with his wife in North Andover. Gravestone reads "He lived like a christian, he died like a soldier."

His name is among those inscribed on a memorial tablet at the Andover Public Library.
