Born on New Year's Day, 1849 in a German-speaking farm community of Saxon immigrants in Missouri, William was baptized Friedrich Wilhelm Timann. He was the oldest child except for a sister who had died in infancy. For some reason he wasn't listed on the 1860 census, though his parents and three younger siblings were. In 1880 he married a girl from his hometown of New Melle, Missouri, Wilhelmine Schiermeier.

According to the book "History of Deshler, Nebraska 1887-1987," William purchased a farm in Thayer County, Nebraska in June 1874, but this seems too early; his son Paul's obituary states that the move to Nebraska was in 1886.

The farm that William bought is located 3.5 miles north of Deshler, a mile or so west of Friedensau in Township 3 North, Range 4 West, Section 25, which is at 40° 12' North, 97° 43' West, and is adjacent to the Little Blue River. William pumped water out of the river using a steam engine, and built a windmill that was the first of its kind in Thayer County. All but William's oldest two children would have been born on this farm. This farm was purchased in the 1940's by William's son Otto, and again purchased in the 1970's by Otto's son George, making it third generation.

Wilhelmine gave William four children, but died when she was only 25. William then married Magdalena Wulfekötter and fathered six more children, for a total of ten:

  • With Wilhelmine:
    • Henry (1881) - Died in a train accident
    • Paul (1882) - Married Clara Albrecht
    • Lena (1885) - Married Albert Juedes
    • Emma (1886) - Married Theodore Vinkenberg
  • With Magdalena:
    • Hannah (1889) - Married Theodore Brauer
    • Otto (1891) - Married Hattie Albrecht, then Erna Lillich
    • Mary (1892) - Married Herman Vinkenberg
    • Martha (1894) - Married Henry Horst
    • Lydia (1896) - Married Paul Poppitz
    • Minnie (1900) - Married Alvin Hitzeman
