William Singleton was born in 1852 at Allington in Lincolnshire, the fourth of eleven children of Eliza Worth Singleton, formerly Bonser, and her husband Robert Singleton, a coachman and groom.
William grew up in Allington, but in late 1871 or 1872 his parents moved to Aston on Trent in Derbyshire, where his mother Eliza died in November 1872, aged 46. Whether or not William moved with his parents is unknown - he was living with them at Allington in 1871, but his next sighting is in 1881 in Burgh le Marsh, Lincolnshire.
William settled in Burgh le Marsh, working as a carrier. In 1885 he married Azubah Margaret Hare. They had four children together between 1887 and 1901, but only the eldest survived infancy. The other three all died shortly after being born.
The 1891 census finds William, Azubah and their son living on Brewery Lane in Burgh le Marsh, whilst in 1901 they were on Chapel Lane.
Azubah died later in 1901. Her youngest (unnamed) daughter's birth and death were also recorded in the last quarter of 1901, so it seems reasonably likely that Azubah died giving birth or shortly afterwards. Azubah was buried at Burgh le Marsh on 27th December 1901. She was 43.
William appears in the 1911 census living alone at East End in Burgh le Marsh.
On 4th February 1921, aged 68, and after nearly 20 years as a widower, William married again. His second wife as Ann (or Annie) Epton, and they married at Burgh le Marsh.
Just over four years later, William died, on 21st March 1925 at Burgh le Marsh. He was 72 years old. He left a will, for which his son Harold acted as executor. William's estate was valued at £658 15s. Ann survived him.
