Childhood
William Scott was born on 14th February 1855 in the gardener's house on the Ladykirk House estate in Berwickshire, Scotland. He was the son of Mary Scott, formerly Robson, and her husband Alexander Scott, who was the master gardener at Ladykirk House. William was the couple's fourth child, but two of their previous children had already died before William was born. He had a surviving elder sister named Sydney. A further seven children would follow, with William eventually being the second of nine surviving children, and the eldest son. His entire childhood appears to have been spent living on the Ladykirk House estate, which stands beside the River Tweed looking across the river to England on the opposite bank.
William with Jane and the children, late 1890s. When William was a child his maternal grandparents, James Robson and Sydney Brown, were still alive. They lived in the town of Kelso, about fourteen miles west of Ladykirk along the Tweed valley. James Robson died in 1879, when William was 24, and Sydney Brown died in 1882, when William was 27.
Adulthood
By this time, William had left home and as pursuing his own career as a gardener. In 1881, he was working as a journeyman gardener at Calder House in Midlothian. By 1891 he was working in Oban, on the north-west coast of Scotland, yet clearly retained connections with the south-east of the country, as he married at Coldstream, in Berwickshire but right on the English border. His bride, Jane Robson, was from Ford, just over the border into England. They married at Coldstream on 11th March 1891, when he was 36 and she was 31.
The couple travelled around, following wherever William found work. During the 1890s they lived at Oban, where their daughter Mary Jane was born in 1892, then Kelso, Roxburghshire, where they had twins, Elizabeth and Hannah in 1895, before settling at Morebattle in Roxburghshire by 1896, when their daughter Margaret was born. At Morebattle they lived at Otterburn Lodge, part of the Otterburn estate. The family outside their home at Morebattle, Otterburn Lodge.
Meanwhile, William's father retired from Ladykirk House, and by 1891 William's parents were living in the village of Norham, just across the border from Ladykirk into England. Alexander died there in 1893, after which William's mother, Mary, went to live in Kelso with William's brother Charles. Mary died in Kelso in 1899.
William and Jane and their family stayed in Morebattle from at least 1896 until after 1915, working for the estate's owner, Thomas Smith Pearson. Jane's widowed mother (also Jane) came to live with the family and died at Otterburn Lodge in 1902. In the 1911 census William and Jane reported that they had had six children, but only four were still living. The identity of the two children who had died has yet to be established.
Sometime between 1915 and 1921, the family moved again to Blairingone in Kinross-shire, where they lived at a house called Rosebank. They later moved to the nearby small town of Dollar in Clackmannanshire, where they lived at Myrtle Cottage, 2 Argyll Street. William lived to see three granddaughters; his daughters Mary, Hannah and Margaret had one daughter each between 1922 and 1926.
Jane died at Myrtle Cottage in 1926, aged 66. William outlived her by fourteen years and died on 27th January 1940, at home at Myrtle Cottage, aged 84.
