  • Rankin, William, born 1/27/1759, 5 miles below Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania; entered service 1779 that County, resided Juniata, in Pennsylvania company; moved with father Thomas Rankin 1780 to Augusta county, virginia, near Staunton, where he entered service soon after in Virginia troop as teamster; Pensioned 1832 Greene County, Tennessee; died 12/13/1833; married 8/28/1787 to Sarah Moore (Marriage bond 8/24/1787 signed by David Moore) Greene County, Tennessee, widow born 7/1763; Pensioned Greene county, Tennessee, 1844, children births: Thomas 7/13/1788, Peggey 1/1/1790, John Moore 4/10/1792, Anthony 8/23/1794, Isabel Clindinon 8/20/1796, William 3/23/1799, Ginny 11/17/1801, & David 2/10/1804; Robert Rankin (no kinship given) chairman of court of Greene County, Tennessee, 1844 when A Rankin (no kinship given) County Justice of the Peace; David Moore (no kinship given) affidavit there then age 75 he was present at soldier's wedding, soldier's widow resided there 1848; query letter in file 1923 from Miss Bessie Magill of Chattanooga, Tennessee; query letter in fole 1900 from grandson William B. Rankin, Austin Texas states soldier's widow was daughter of Anthony Moore who moved from Northampton County, Pennsylvania, to shat now Tennessee abt. 1781, further soldier's widow died 10/9/1849. William Rankin, son of Thomas and Isabella (Clendenin) Rankin, was born 1-27-1759. He married Sarah Moore (b. 1764). William Rankin was present at the surrender of Cornwallis. He made a very hazardous trip with Mr. Bradshaw, a brother-in-law, among hostile Indians, to Alabama, to procure corn which prevented a famine in East Tennessee. William died 12-13-1838.
