[edit] Biography of William B PollardTHIS PAGE IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION, PLEASE CHECK BACK! William B Pollard was born in Virginia and is believed to have accompanied his parents to Chatham County, North Carolina and then on to Greenville County, South Carolina. The earliest record found for William Pollard in Greenville, SC is when Thomas Samford, Benjamin Pollard and William Pollard were witnesses to a sale of 100 acres of land to James Samford from Michael B Purkle and Barbara Purkle as part of a tract of original 200 acres recorded in Book B, page 57-58, April 28, 1789 [4].(page 57 is missing and I need to reorder it). The first known record of a William Pollard purchasing land in Greenville County, South Carolina is the purchase of 130 acres of land adjacent and sharing a line with Benjamin Pollard's land. The deed is signed on 10 Dec 1794 and recorded in Greenville, South Carolina Deed Book D, pages 480 and 481[9][10]. The land included a singular house, outhouses, waterway passages, fences, etc. It is witnessed by Benjamin Pollard, Charles Pope and James Samford. So William has purchased his first home? Benjamin Pollard Sen and William Pollard sell 140 acres of land for 100 pounds to William Cox on 16 May 1799 and recorded on 1 June 1800. 10 Acres come from the land of Benjamin and 130 acres come from the land of William -- is the land between them since their property lines are shared? Could this land sale be because of a marriage? The deed is recorded in Book E, pages 416-417[11][12] and is witnessed by James Samford and John Evens. It also mentions the land is "within a few rods of Benj Pollard's Mill". Noteworthy: A "John Evans" and "William Cox" are mentioned in a "List of 136 Loyalist Captured During the Snow Campaign"[4]. On 27 July 1801, Harmon Shewmaker sold to William Pollard, 125 acres of land on a branch of the Reedy River. This deed was recorded on 9 Feb 1836, in Book S, page 48[33] Benjamin Pollard Jun'r appears in the land records selling part of a plantation tract for $500.00 along with William Pollard, signed 25 Jan 1808, and recorded 31 March 1808 to George Bain. Benjamin Pollard (Sr.) signs as a J. P. witnessing the signature of James Hide, Samuel Hicks, Greenville, SC Deed Book H, page 75-76[13][14]. This land deed mentions that "Benjamin Pollard Jun'r land was part of a tract granted to Benjamin Pollard Jun'r and signed by Paul Hamilton on the 19 day of November 1805 as by the plats assigned to the said grants will more fully appear together with all and singular the rights..." This particular piece of property also mentions a sharing line with Frederick Croft, Jacob Croft, and William Pollard's property lines. It is witnessed by: Benjamin Pollard, J.P., and James Hide, Samuel Hicks. On 3 June 1808 William Pollard sells 100 acres of land to Eli Baldwin for $350. This was recorded in Book K p 305-306[17][18] on 3 November 1808 and was witnessed by John Brasher and David Cotton.
[edit] 1809 Benjamin Pollard Senr Acquires 2/3 Mill InterestBetween Horates Griffin of Greenville District, South Carolina and Benja Pollard Senr, paid $300.00. Land is described: Grant bargain sell and release to the said Benja Pollard two hundred acres of land more of less together with two thirds of a mill that is situated on said back of land that said land is situated on the waters of Piles Branch, Beginning on a poplar stump on Wm Coxes line thence running up Piles branch the middle of the water is the line and across the dam to a maple stump in the pon (?), thence westward by one chair two pence staks thence Northward two chains to a black Oak comes on James Samfords line thence running westward along the old Indian trale to a stake corner on the road, then Southward along the said Road crossing said Piles Branch at the Ford below John Pollards Cotton Machine to a sweet gum thence to a large pine stump thence to a stake comes on the original line thence So Eastwardly on the on the said original line to a final corner thence North Eastwardly to a stake corner on Wm Cox's line thence along said Cox's line to the Beginning corner including two hundred acres of Land more or less, together with all and singular the rights members hereditaments and appertanances to the said premises belonging or in any wise incident or apportaining. The deed is signed by H Griffin on the 14 day of September 1809. The deed is witnessed by "William Pollard" and "James Pollard" on the 25 day of Dec 1809 and recorded 5 March 1810, Book H, p334-335[15][16]. B Griffith is the Justice of Peace. We do not know who owns the other 1/3 of the mill. On 25 March 1813 Benjamin Pollard Jr. sells a plantation tract of land consisting of 200 acres and situated on both sides of the Reedy River to William Pollard. It included all the houses, out houses, Mill Machines, and other buildings. This deed was signed and notarized in 1813, but was not recorded until 9 Feb 1836[19]. On 2 Sep 1813, George Owen sells to William Pollard, 100 acres of land, recorded in Book S, page 47[22][23]. This deed is witnessed by Eli Lee and Wiley C Owen. It is also signed by Justice of Peace Benjamin Pollard (Sr). The deed is not recorded until the 9 Nov 1836. On 5 Feb 1814, Andrew Nelson and Benjamin Pollard Jr sell 100 acres of land to William Pollard for $400.00. This deed is recorded in Book S, page 47-48[20][21] on 9 Feb 1836. It is witnessed by James Pollard and Elizabeth Hide. How Benjamin Jr and Andrew Nelson acquire joint ownership is not clear. On 21 Nov 1818, William Pollard sells to George Owen, 120 acres of land for $450.00. This is recorded on 9 Jan 1826 in Book F[24], page 44, and is witnessed by John Smith and Isaah Hide. On 16 March 1825, John and Rachel Lee sell their 227 acres of land on both sides of the Maple Creek Swamp of the Reedy River for $300 to William Pollard. This deed takes the wife of the within named, John Lee, being privately and separately examined, without any compulsion, dread or fear swears under oath that she relinquished all her interest and estate and also her right and claim of dower to the mentioned premises". This deed is recorded in Book S, p48[25] and was recorded on 9 Feb 1836. It is witnessed by H P Samford, J. W. Pollard, and George Bain as Justice of Peace. On 5 Feb 1832, Thomas Dyer sells to John W Pollard for $200, 117 acres situated on the head of Pigeon Ruft Branch on the waters of Reedy River. This deed was Witnessed by William B Pollard and William Pollard is J. P. It is recorded on 18 November 1833, Book R, page 132[34]. This particular parcel of land later becomes part of a conflict between John W Pollard and Jacob Linderman over the height of a dam by John W Pollard. Linderman sues John W Pollard and it goes to arbitration to settle the conflict between the two men on 23 February 1834. On 19 Aug 1833 William Pollard sells 5 acres of land on both sides of the Reedy River with the shoal where the "Mill Stood", to "Four Pollards" John Pollard, William Pollard, Benjamin Pollard, and Eli Pollard. It is recorded on 11 Oct 1834, Book R pp252-253[26][27]. There are two possible explanations for William Pollard selling to "William Pollard". There could actually be two William Pollards, William Pollard Sr, and William B Pollard, or this could be William Parham Pollard, thought to be Benjamin's son selling to William B Pollard. I believe it is probably the latter. In Jack Geddie's book, Southern Pollard's, he states that William Parham Pollard emerged about 1824 to migrate to Pickens, Alabama. That would be at about the time this deed was signed. Furthermore, there is not two William Pollard's in the early census records, except Parham Pollard is shown in the 1820 census for Greenville. Several researchers show Parham's full name as William Parham Pollard. Without further documents, only possible conclusions may be drawn and I am preceding with the latter, that this is William Parham Pollard selling his interest before his move to Alabama. On 6 Jan 1833, William Pollard sells 127 acres of land lying on both side of Maple Swamp Creek of the Reedy River to Jeremiah Hide. It is witnessed by William B Pollard and Ezra Hide. This deed would point to evidence there is a William Pollard Senr and William B Pollard, as William Pollard Senr is clearly listed in the statement of Oath of the Justice. It is recorded on 15 Jan 1838, Book S, p 352[28], along with several other deeds. On 21 February 1834, William Pollard sells 100 acres of land to Eli Pollard lying on the Reedy River. This deed is witnessed by John Lee and John W Pollard. It also reference William as "Wm Pollard Sr" in the Oath that was taken by John W Pollard that he saw William Pollard Sr sign the deed and give it to Eli Pollard. It is recorded in Book S, page 50[30] on 13 Feb 1836. 16 of March 1836 four Pollards sold the shoal mill and part of a tract of land containing 5 acres to John Ashmore for $410.00. This deed was signed by John W Pollard, Benjamin Pollard Jr., William B Pollard, and Eli Pollard. It was also signed by their four wives: Barbary Pollard (John W), Mary Pollard (William B), Lily Pollard (Eli Pollard??), and Sarah Pollard (Benj Jr?).It was recorded in Book S, page 162[29] on 17 Oct 1836. On 16 March 1836, William Pollard sells 200 acres on the north side of the Reedy River at the north of George Spillars home to John Ashmore. The deed is witnessed by William B Pollard and George Spillars. It was recorded 16 Nov 1836 in book S, page 185, 15 Jan 1838, William Pollard sells to John Mayfield 75 acres of land on the Waters of the Reedy Fork of the Reedy River. This deed is witnessed by Hiram Hyde and what appears to be another William Pollard. It is recorded in book S, p185[29] on 15 Jan 1838. and Benjamin Nelson was the J. P. 15 Jan 1838, William Pollard sells to John Mayfield 75 acres of land on the Waters of the Reedy Fork of the Reedy River. This deed is witnessed by Hiram Hyde and what appears to be another William Pollard. It is recorded in book S, p380[31] on 15 Jan 1838. References
