About William Paul

There are few records regarding William Paul, who died and left his will in Augusta County, which was probated on 16 November, 1757. Based upon the persons listed as executors and witnesses in his will and appraisement*, William Paul was living in the "Borden Tract" in then Augusta (later Rockbridge County) Virginia. He named his sons John, James and daughter Margaret in his will. His son John Paul appears to be the John Paul that acquired 400 acres in the Borden Tract just a few years before his father's death in 1754*. His daughter Margaret MAY be the Margaret Paul that married Richard Woods, but further research is necessary to prove. William Paul's wife (name unknown) apparently had predeceased him, since she was not named in his will or any other records.

  • [Note: many of the witnesses and appraisers of William Paul's will and appraisal lived very nearby the tract acquired by John Paul, William Paul's apparent son].

Will of William Paul

From Chalkley’s Augusta County Records:

  • Page 202.--26th August, 1751. William Paul's will--To daughter Margaret, all estate; to son John, 5 shillings; son James, 5 shillings. Executors, Charles Hays, James Moore. Teste: James Lee, Samuel Linsey. Proved, 16th November, 1757, by the witnesses. Chas. Hays qualifies with James Trimble, Saml. Linsey.
The Charles Hays named as executor of William Paul's estate is Person: Charles Hays (4), son of the Oath Taker Person: John Hays (20). The second wife of this Charles was named Margaret (married by 1770) and possibly the daughter of William Paul as named in the Last Will & Testament.
