Parentage
William's parents are not known. However it is thought that they were the William and Rebecca (Brough) Overton who were residing in Bardney at that time. There are a few hints to support this speculation:
- No baptism records have been found for any children of the couple between 27 May 1788 (Mary) and 1 Dec. 1793 (Robert). The younger William was born about this time.
- A burial record in 1804 for an Ebb Overton, recorded as the son of William and Rebecca, states that Ebb was aged 13 years. This places his birth during the period of time in which no baptism records were found. This indicates that it is quite possible that the younger William's baptism record may be missing.
- No other known children of the couple are named “William”. Also the names of the younger William's children—Thomas, John, William, and Rebecca—match members of the couple's family.
