William was married to more than one wife at the same time. The 1870 census includes both Mary Ann and Augusta in the same household with him, with children by both of them[5]. In the 1880 census (by which time Mary Ann had died), his wife Huldah is listed with him, along with his children by Mary Ann, and Augusta is listed with her children in a separate household with no head of household (she is listed as "wife")[6].
