Acquisition of Land in Augusta County, VA:

• William Lowry acquired land from his father John Lowry, who had died in 1762. William and his first wife, Isabel sold this land (with William Lowrys' uncle Robert Lowry) to James Henry in the following transaction in 1771:

• Page 497.--20th November, 1771. William Lowrie and Isabel and Robert Lowrey, Sr., to James Henry, 170 acres of Borden's 92100, 160 acres of which was devised to Wm. Lowrie by his father John Lowrie, by will in Augusta, the remaining 10 acres sold by said Robert Lowry, John Weir's line, Edmiston's corner. Teste: Samuel Huston, William Walker, Robert Lowrey, Samuel Henry. Delivered: James Henry, 26th July, 1774.

1. WILLIAM4 LOWRY, SR. (JOHN3, JOHN2, MR.1) was born Abt. 1747 in prob. Augusta County, Virginia1, and died 08 May 1820 in Monroe County, Tennessee1. He married (1) ISABEL ??? WFT Est. 1766-17791. He married (2) ANN MCCLELLAN 17 Mar 1797 in Near Morganton, Blount County, Tennessee2, daughter of ABRAHAM MCCLELLAN. She was born Abt. 1770, and died Abt. 1848.

William Lowry Sr. was married to Ann McClellan who was previously married to John Wallace. John was killed by the Indians in 1793, at Rome, Georgia. Ann had at least 5 children by John Wallace. Ann married William Lowry in Blount Co., Tennessee. According to a court case in Monroe County, TN, William, Sr. died in 1820 in Monroe County, TN near the mouth of Bat Creek before his wife, Ann, and their sons, William M. and David, moved to Island Creek in Monroe County, TN. in 1820 or 1821.

In 1859, John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry, Virginia occured. He captured the United States Arsenal, killing 5 men. He was tried, convicted, and hanged. Civil War loomed on the horizon. The threat of Civil War and the fact that "New Land" was available in Texas, prompted William M. Lowry, his wife Elizabeth Kelso, three daughters, (two of them married) and a son William Edington Lowry, to move to Texas, where William M. bought 148 acres of land for $296.00, located at Jacob's Prarie, 10 miles NNE of Greenville, Texas.

In 1869, William M., sold the land to William Edington Lowry, his son, "for the same amount he paid for it", then William M. and Elizabeth returned to Monroe County, Tennessee where Elizabeth died in 1873.

William McClellan Lowry was a cripple from a broken hip for a number of years before his death. He was injured while grooming his pet mare. The mare threw her head as the flies bothered her. William M. was struck as he stood beside her. He had made several trips to Texas to visit some of his children before he was injured. William M. died in 1880. He and Elizabeth are buried in the Cochran Cemetery located one mile West of the L. & N. Railroad Station of Kinkaid and six miles North of Madisonville, Tennessee. The Cemetery is located on the land where the Lowry family settled when they arrived in Monroe

County, Tennessee, in 1819. They Purchased the land for ten cents an acre.
