Seguin Enterprise, [Friday] May 24, 1901, Death of Major W.G. King

It is with deep sadness that we chronicle the death of Major W.G.King, which occurred at his home in East Seguin at ten o'clock last Monday morning.

When this town and country were in their infancy, "Uncle Billy", as he was familiarly known to the people here who loved him, was here and here remained for these many, many years. In his parting from earth unto that fairer land on the other side of the river, he leaves among us a name as spotless as mortals ever leave - a priceless heritage to his descendants and neighbors and friends. Be it said in his just praise that the perfect harmony of his life, in the words of the poet, "Like listless lullabies of twilight seas, heard from still coves and soft and sad as these; such is the echo of his perfect song - it lives - it lingers long."

The sting of death in the hearts of those who are left behind is softened a thousand time o'er when they can feel that the soul of him who lies at rest was spotless and true, and has flown to that land where the brow of virtue shall be bathed in Heaven's freshest dew. May it be so now with those who loved Uncle Billy, for we cannot doubt that he is safe "on that bright eternal shore".

Major King was 78 years, seven months and twenty days of age at his death. He lived a long and useful life, and besides his many friends, leaves to mourn his loss two sons, Mr. Henry King of this place and Mr. John King of the Indian Territory, and one daughter, Mrs. Annie Colville who resides here, and his aged wife.

Services were held at the residence and interment at the Family Burial Ground with burial services by the Masonic order on May 21st.

We extend to the grief-stricken family our deepest sympathies. No words we can say will add to the grandeur of the good man's life; no tribute we can pay would make his name more beloved among our people and we are content to leave his memory to pay the tribute of honor unto his dust.

  1. The birth date of 22 Oct 1823 is found on the Internet, for example, Harrington Family and Petty Family. (Harrington is the maiden name of William's grandmother, and Petty is the maiden name of his mother.) It is suspected that both of these website represent the same ultimate source, speculated to be a family Bible. The obituary given here gives the age at death on 20 May 1901 as 78y, 7m, 20d, which calculates to a birth of 30 Sep 1822. It is unknown what the explanation is, for the discrepancy.
