William George Hucklesby was born on 23rd August 1902 at Harpenden in Hertfordshire, son of Ellen Hucklesby, formerly Smith, and her husband William Hucklesby, a builder's labourer. Young William appears in the 1911 census living at 6 Symington Street (later renamed Park Mount) in Harpenden. He was generally known as Bill.

In 1929, he married Lily Nicholls, who was also from Harpenden. They had one son in 1930.

At the outbreak of the Second World War Lil, Bill and their son were living in Harpenden at 21 Sibley Avenue, a bungalow to the south of the town, close to where Lil had been born. They appear to have had a twelve year old evacuee from London living with them. Bill was working as a bricklayer.

Bill and Lil lived at 21 Sibley Avenue for the rest of their lives. Bill died in 1978, aged 76. Lil outlived him by nearly twenty years.
