Overview

Dr William Houston was born in 1710 in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. His uncle was Henry McCulloch, a wealthy London merchant who had received several land grans from King Goergoe II. The two came together landing in Georgia in 1733 ref name="Whyte">Whyyte, Donald, A dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to the U.S.A. Page 60, fide Schrat, 2012]. Houston arrived in New Hanover Co., NC in 1736, serving as his uncles "trustee, land agent, and associate" he establshed a home site on a high bluff on the North Rast River, in Duplin County, sixty miles north of Wilmington, NC. Here he practiced his professions of physicianbb, apothecary, and surgeon for over fifty years. His plantation was named "Sarecta" possibly in honor of Mount Saracte in Greece, the site of the Temple of Apollo, the Greek and Roman god of medicine and healing [1]
