William Hornet was born on 25th July 1829 at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire, son of a straw plaiter named Mary Hornet, formerly Swallow, and her husband Joseph Hornet, a labourer. William's father died when he was only three years old. His mother remarried a widower named Francis Warner the year after Joseph's death. The 1841 census finds William living with his mother and stepfather at Coldharbour in Harpenden. By 1851, Francis had died and William was living with his twice-widowed mother and siblings at Upper Top Street in Harpenden. By this time, William was working as an agricultural labourer.
William was married in 1854 to a Mary Thompson, who had had a son called Arthur earlier that year. Arthur's baptism originally had the name William written in the place for the father's name, but this was crossed out, and when Arthur married in 1879 he gave his father's name as "William Horten". It is therefore possible that William was Arthur's father. William and Mary do not appear to have had any further children together.
It is not clear what happened to William, who has yet to be traced after 1854. By 1861 Mary was describing herself as a widow, and she remarried in 1865. However, no death record for William has been found in the area.
