We have since found a male HILL, who is a cousin of Jan Saunders, who was a 25/25 markers DNA match with Richard Hill. Jan, and her cousin, Ralph Hill, are proven descendants of Ralph Hill, of the Plymouth Colony Plymouth Plantation, in 1638. The 25/25 DNA markers match proved that our ancestor William Hill, I, of Fayette Co, and Crawford, Co, PA, from 1783-1807, who married Mary Rittenhouse?, and Ralph Hill born about 1600, died 1663 were related. It meant that we may belong to the same family clan, or tribe of HILLs. Both have had 37 DNA marker tests taken, and the results came in, in January 2006. Jan's cousin Ralph Hill and Richard Hill show 36/37 markers match with the Ralph Hill, of the Plymouth Colony in 1638. This means that we are very closely related.

Dorian Hill, a descendant of Jonathan Hill, whose family came with Peter Hill, I, to St. Clair Co, IL, entered his DNA about this time, and has, also proved a 36/37 DNA marker match with Ralph Hill and Richard Hill. This means that they are all from the same family clan, or tribe of HILLs. We have all now, January 2007, received our 67 DNA marker tests, and they have proved to be 66/67 DNA marker matches! Very few people achieve this close level of a match. It is believed that Richard?s ancestor, William Hill?s DNA may be the base line of this Hill family. Jan?s, Ralph Hill, is only off ?1? marker and that is in the ?CDYa? marker, with a Genetic Distance of ?1?, while Dorian?s, Jonathan, is off ?1? marker in the ?CDYb? marker, with a Genetic Distance of ?2?.

William Hill, I, of Fayette, and Crawford Co?s in PA, and Ralph Hill, of the Plymouth Plantation, MA in 1638, and Jonathan Hill, whom we believe came with William?s son, Peter Hill in 1807 to St. Clair Co, IL, are all very closely related.

Distance Relation Explanation - 1, Closely Related 36/37 You share the same surname or a variant with another male and you mismatch by only one 'point' at only one marker--a 36/37 match. It's most likely that you matched 24/25 or 25/25 on a previous Y-DNA test and your mismatch will be found within DYS 576, 570, CDYa or CDYb. Very few people achieve this close level of a match.

Richard Hill's Family Tree DNA Certificate - Y-DNA - They sent with it an article about "Understanding your 37 markers." They give a chart: "Number of matching markers". Jan's cousin, Ralph, and Richard's markers showing a 66/67 marker match; Dorian Hill also shows a 66/67 marker match. Richard is the 7th generation back counting William Hill, Sr. - Ralph is the 10th generation back counting Ralph Hill, of Plymouth Colony in 1638. Dorian is the 6th generation back counting Jonathan Hill. Was Jonathan Hill, a nephew or cousin of William Hill, Sr.[--?--] According to the Chart - There is a 90% probability that the MRCA Most Recent Common Ancestor lived no longer than 8 generations ago. - There is a 95% probability that the MRCA lived no longer than 10 generations ago. This is a remarkable match, and there is a very great chance that we need only 1 to 3 generations to find the link. At least we can be pretty sure that it may not be longer than 10 or 11 generations ago altogether.

The remarkable thing about all of this is that none of us know one another, and have never met! We have found one another through the Hill Family DNA Project. We have always heard that another Hill family traveled with Peter Hill, I, to St. Clair Co, IL about 1807-1808, and it is believed that this was the family was Jonathan Hill.

In perusing the tests results for other Surnames we find that the HILLs are mostly from England, Ireland, and Scotland. I believe that most are from Ireland. A number of centuries back, we found HILL Ministers removing from England to Ireland. In later years, HILL Ministers removed from Ireland to Holland. Were these our ancestors?

Family tradition says that our HILL family left England, and went to Holland for Religious freedom, and then later, a short time after the Mayflower, our HILL family came to America, stopping off in England on the way. Source: Ella Hill, from her parents, Samuel Arthur Hill, and wife, Nancy Elizabeth Eubanks Hill.

William HILL, SR. was born before 1755; his wife?s name was Mary, born 1755-1757. In the 1802 Tax Rolls of Conneaut Twsp., Crawford Co, PA, William is listed as Sr. and it does not show him as a single man, but, in 1803, he is shown as a single man. Mary must have died 1802-1803. William may have died shortly after 1803. We do not know where he died; it was probably in Franklin Township., Fayette Co, or Crawford Co, PA, but, then again he may have accompanied his son and daughters in their move to IL Territory, St. Clair Co, IL, 1807-1808. There is some evidence that this is not only probably, but possible.

We have estimated the time of William?s marriage to Mary RITTENHOUSE? as having been between 1770 and 1773, probably in New Jersey. We do know that William and Mary were in Western PA for sometime before 1783. William may have been here earlier and they met and married in Western PA. There were HILLs in western PA as early as the 1750?s.

From: History of St. Clair Co IL," Volume II, Compiled by the St. Clair Co Genealogical Society of IL, Published by Curtis Media Corporation, © 1992: F339 - THE HILL FAMILY--"Tradition is that our immigrant HILL ancestor and family came to America shortly after the first pilgrims from Holland. They were of English descent, having left England during the religious troubles to raise their families in Holland where they had religious freedom. At the execution of Johan John Van Oldenbarneveldt the Advocate of Holland and Zeeland, on 13 May 1619, religious freedom was sharply curtailed and we would suspect that like the pilgrims, who came to America in 1620, the HILL Family came to the New World so as to practice their religion freely. When the HILLS fled from England previously, they took with them to Holland the Family Bible which had in it their family records. In crossing the channel the Bible fell into the water and all records were washed away. This bible was, many years ago, known to be still in the hands of a HILL descendant born in St. Clair Co, but who was living in Southern Missouri where she was a school teacher. We don't know what has become of the Bible. Ella Hill, daughter of Samuel Arthur Hill and Nancy Elizabeth Eubanks, insisted that the name of our immigrant ancestor was Peter Hill. This we have not been able to prove as yet. There were many, many HILLs in America during Colonial Times."

George Wilderman, Sr., father of our Peter's wife, Elizabeth Wilderman, was born in Washington Co, MD. Did Jacob Wilderman, father of George, and George meet the HILLs in Washington Co, and become friends? George was born in Washington Co, MD! Jacob enlisted in the Revolutionary War, 20 July 1776 in Baltimore Co, MD. Was it at this time that the WILDERMAN family moved to Baltimore Co, MD?

We have many "Family Tree Maker" CDs and have found them to be very useful. We present our findings for all to peruse! DO NOT QUOTE AS FACTS, PLEASE!

Is it possible that the above Peter Hill may be the father of William Hill, and, James, William's brother? Research needs to be done on the above. We have NOT a piece of evidence to prove if this is so.

?Crawford Co, PA,? ?History,? ?Historical Township Boundaries?: ?Townships were formed and boundaries altered either by act of the state legislature or by order of the Co court of quarter sessions, ?so as to suit the convenience of the inhabitants thereof.?  ?Act of 24 March 1803, Laws of PA 7:71, 72 § 1[with an editorial note that ?the power given by this act appears to have been long previously thereto exercised by the courts of quarter sessions?].?  ?Any prior tax rolls, when Conneaut Township was still part of Allegheny Co, are apparently lost.?

Since much of Jonathan Hill, and Stuntz information seems to be intertwined with Beaver, and Conneaut Twps. of Crawford Co, Pa, and Erie Township or Erie Co, PA, we think that a little of Erie's information should be added here.

Formation of Erie Co, PA The territory forming this Co was on April 4, 1798, erected into "Erie Township", a part of the Co of Allegheny, which had been created Sept. 24, 1788. In this style it remained until March 12, 1800, when it was separately constituted as Erie Co, but with Meadville Crawford Co as the seat of justice for some time. On April 2, 1803, this Co was fully organized for all purposes, in the house of George Buehler, on the northeast corner of Third and French Streets, in the City of Erie, and since then has been a fully organized municipality."

Since most records of Erie Township and Co, had their seat of justice in Meadville, most of the records of Erie were recorded there. Therefore we find Jonathan Hill, and the Stuntzs records intermingled with the records of Conneaut, and Bever Twps. of Crawford Co, PA.

From: History of Crawford Co, PA," History & Biography, 1885, "Township Histories" Pg. 502-504, 522-526; Warner, Beers, & Co, Chicago, IL, 1885. The following was received from: Iola Kaiser of Freeburg, St. Clair Co, IL; from a letter dated 28 March 1968 from Pat Turner who helped research these families; also we have perused this material CJH.

BEAVER TOWNSHIP, CRAWFORD Co, PA, Pgs. 502-504: "Beaver was one of the eight townships erected directly after the organization of Crawford Co Its original boundaries, under date of July 9, 1800, are thus preserved in the docket of Quarter Sessions Court..." The surface is low and level. In early times it was wet and a large portion, it was supposed, could never be used for farming purposes, but since the timber has been removed the land is found to be dry, arable and productive...Beech, maple, ash and poplar were the prevailing types of timber. The soil is clayey..." The northern and central portions of the township consist of tracts which were patented by individuals, most of whom, however, were not settlers. The land act of 1792, besides the payment of 20 cents per acre, required a five years' residence and the clearing of eight acres to perfect a title to a tract of 400 acres. In many instances a non-resident entered the land and compiled with the terms of settlement by means of a temporary tenant, to whom a stipend or a portion of the tract was given, while other enterprising pioneers with large families entered several tracts, built rude cabins and placed a son in each one. The western part of Beaver Township consists of thirteen tracts, owned by the American Land Company, while in the eastern and southern portions the PA Population Company acquired the title of sixteen tracts. "Settlements were commenced in Beaver as early as 1797. Some of the pioneers came and placed their cabins on tracts which they expected to patent and occupy permanently. Others came by contract with the PA Population Company, agreeing to settle and make the necessary improvements for a gratuity of 100 acres, usually in addition purchasing from the company 50 or 100 acres. When the opinion gained currency that the actual residents were entitled to the entire tract by virtue of their settlement, most of these early settlers either abandoned their clearings and sought a choicer tract, or maintained their residence, and atttempted to hold the entire tract against the company. Several test cases tried in the courts resulted adversely to the residents, and they were obliged to relinquish their clains."

LAND TRACTS BEAVER TWSP., CRAWFORD Co, PA, 1797 "Records of the Population Company make the following exhibit of their lands in what is now Beaver Township, giving the name of the settler, date of contract, which preceded the date of settlement only a few days, and the amount of land to be granted:

Records of the Population Company In 1797: William HILL, SR., wife Mary, sons, Peter and William HILL, JR., are, in the Land Tract Records of Beaver Twsp., Crawford Co, PA, shown on the following tracts of land:

Tract 661, Peter HILL, November 20 1797, 200 acres, deed delivered to Thomas Collins, March 9, 1807 Tract 662, Mary HILL, November 20, 1797, 200 acres, same as 661 Mary died about 1803 Tract 663, William HILL, November 20, 1797, 200 acres, deed delivered to Thomas Collins, March 9, 1807 Tract 664, unsold Tract 667, Henry Sharp, November 20, 1797, 200 acres, deed delivered to Thomas Collins, March 9, 1807 Tract 668, William HILL, JR., November 20, 1797, 200 acres, deed delivered to Thomas Collins, no date given!"

?Other early settlers in Beaver prior to 1800 came mostly from Cumberland, Northumberland, Susquehanna, and Huntingdon Counties. Among this list, we found Philip McGuire. Later most of these settlers scattered, "and in a few years, owing chiefly to the land troubles, Beaver Township was almost deserted. Perhaps the wet quality of the soil also induced some to seek homes elsewhere. In 1806 only three families remained, among them was Philip McGuire. Of the forty-seven chattel property tax-payers in the original Beaver Township, in 1810, only these three dwelt in what is now Beaver. About 1812 Philip McGuire removed with his family to Summit Township."

CONNEAUT TOWNSHIP., CRAWFORD Co, PA, Pgs. 522-526: "Conneaut Township was organized July 9, 1800...As thus constituted it was the middle one of the three original western townships of Crawford Co.." The surface is level or gently rolling. Paden Creek flows southward through the western part, and Mill Creek throughthe eastern part, both entering Shenango Creek in Pine Township. Along the streams the soil is a gravelly loam, and beyond it is generally a clay....Red and white oak, beech, hickory and other varieties of timber densely covered the surface. Hemlock grew in the southwest part. "Except a narrow strip along the western line, which was owned by the American Land Company, the township was included within the domain of the PA Population Company. The agent of this latter company was Jabez Colt, who, in order to stimulate immigration to these lands, in the summer of 1797, or earlier, engaged the services of a half dozen or more sturdy, young, unmarried immigrants and made an improvement called Colt's Station, in the eastern part of the township, and probably at the south end of the dividing line, between Tracts 710 and 711, or in Tract 715. For several years they remained here, but the place did not flourish and the land agent abandoned the settlement and made another improvement in what is now Pine Township. The following statement shows the condition of the Population tracts in 1812, when the company closed its business--the number of the tract, name of settler, date of contract, number of acres, contracted for and its final disposition. Each tract contains an area slightly exceeding 400 acres." Among those shown on the following tracts of land are:

LAND TRACTS CONNEAUT TWSP., CRAWFORD Co, PA, 1797 Tract 716, Thomas McGuire, September 28, 1809, 100 acres, settled under contract Tract 719, John Wilderman, November 7, 1797, 200 acres, settled, and deed granted Isaac Paden Tract 721, James Elliston, October 27, 1797, 200 acres, settled under contract and deed granted Isaac Paden Tract 722, Obed Garwood, october 27, 1797, 200 acres, deed granted Garwood Tract 729, George Wilderman, October 19, 1797, 200 acres, deed delivered to William Shanks, assignee of Wilderman Tracts 730 and 731, unsold Pg. 524, Tract 731 shows, William Hill Jr. settled in the southwest part of the township, where he remained till death Tract 735, Jacob Wilderman, November 7, 1797, 100 acres, small improvement under contract and abandoned, intruded on and abandoned

William Hill, Jr., married Ruth Paden, daughter of Isaac Paden and Rebecca Garwood. William Hill's sister, Susannah Hill, married Thomas McGuire. Peter Hill, brother of William Hill, Jr., and Susannah Hill, married Elizabeth Wilderman, the daughter of George Wilderman. John and Jacob were sons of George Wilderman, and brothers of Elizabeth Wilderman.

The large number of abandonments and assignments are parrticularly noticeable in this township. Pioneer privations were severe and continuous. The labor of clearing the timber was extremely arduous, and the soil was often found too low and wet to produce crops. In consequence, most of those who settled here either sold their claims for the small price they would command or abandoned them entirely and left the country. Difficulties with the Land Company also arose, and increased the discontent and emigration. Many were without means, but did not remove until they were literally starved out. In more than one instance planted potatoes were dug up and greedily devoured by these primitive settlers. The following were tax-paying residents of the township in 1810: Among those listed were: Obed Garwood, William, Thomas McGuire, and Rebecca Paden..." "Obed Garwood, brother to Joseph Garwood, formerly of Summit Township, came from Fayette Co He was a farmer and millwright, and settled on Tract 722, where his sons now reside. William settled on Tract 731 in the southwest part of the township, where he remained till death. Thomas McGuire settled on Tract 716, but did not remain long." He removed to St. Clair Co, IL, in 1819. CJH. "Isaac Paden came early from Fayette Co, and located in the southwest part, where he remained through life..." The township settled slowly. As late as 1830 there were still few settlers within its bounds, but as the lands were cleared the surface became drier and more tillable..." The first grist and saw-mill was built by Mr. Paden in the southwest part on Paden's Run prior to 1810. The grist-mill was a small affair, having but one run of stone, and operated only at intervals, when a sufficient head of water had accumulated to run the mill. Obed Garwood also operated an early grist-mill..." "Thomas McGuire, an Irishman, probably taught the first school about 1810, in a cabin which stood near the deserted Colt's Station. A year or two later Samuel Garwood held a term in the southeast part of the township. Educational advantages, however, were extremely meager. A schoolhouse was built in 1818 two miles south of the center near the Crockett Schoolhouse." Thomas McGuire removed to St. Clair Co, IL in 1819. CJH "An early Society of Friends or Quakers had existence in the township. It included in its membership, William Hill, and Isaac Paden.

The HILL, WILDERMAN, and RITTENHOUSE, QUICK families have always been very close. About 1803-1805, Peter HILL, and wife, Elizabeth WILDERMAN, with some of his siblings, and the WILDERMAN family and the family of William RITTENHOUSE moved from PA to IL Territory, now St. Clair Co, IL. William RITTENHOUSE may have died long before this time or accompanied his brother, Elijah to Northwest Territory IL as he didn't accompany his family when they came. Elijah RITTENHOUSE and his family were already here by this time. Peter HILL settled in the Turkey Hill area and is listed as "Squatter" in Territorial IL when receiving a tract of land from the government. Elijah RITTENHOUSE's land is shown as joining Peter's land on the West. Many descendents of the HILL and RITTENHOUSE Families are still living in Freeburg, St. Clair Co, IL and although the relationship has been lost in time, they are still very close.

"Formation of Beaver Township [1 Crawford Co Court of Quarter Sessions Dk. 1:3-5.
