William Haywood was baptised on 2nd November 1834 at East Stoke in Nottinghamshire, son of Ann Haywood, formerly Bonser, and her husband William Haywood, a shoe maker. It seems likely that young William was a few weeks old when baptised, as it would appear that his mother had died two months earlier - possibly giving birth to him or shortly afterwards. His father had also died whilst his mother was pregnant with him, having been buried in July 1834. Young William was therefore left orphaned from a very early age.

William was brought up by his mother's parents, William and Elizabeth Bonser, who lived at East Stoke. The 1841 census finds William living at East Stoke with his grandparents and his two half-siblings (his mother's children from before her marriage).

By 1851 William was working as a general servant in the neighbouring village of Elston. Back in East Stoke, William's grandfather died in 1853 and his grandmother in 1856.

On 14th May 1859, aged 24, William married Hannah Beeson at Cotham, about three miles south-east of East Stoke. After their marriage they lived for the first few years at Long Bennington in Lincolnshire, about three miles south-east of Cotham. They appear there in the 1861 census, when William was working as an agricultural labourer, and they had two sons were born there in 1861 and 1866.

By 1871 the family had moved to Shelton in Nottinghamshire, about two miles south-west of Cotham, where William worked as a gamekeeper. William was still working as a gamekeeper ten years later, when he and Hannah were living at Staunton, another village in the same area.

Hannah died at the age of 55. She was buried at Cotham on 3rd October 1890.

The 1891 census finds William living alone at Asherton Hill in Long Bennington, and working again as an agricultural labourer.

William died at the age of 60. He was buried at Cotham on 18th March 1895.
