William Richard Harry was born on 12th July 1859 at Plymouth in Devon, son of Jane Harry, formerly Drake, and her husband William Richard Harry, a shipwright. Young William appears in the 1861 census living at 12 Claremont Street in Plymouth with his parents and siblings. He was the fifth of ten children, but the fourth of six who lived to adulthood, and the eldest boy. The 1871 and 1881 censuses also find William living with his parents and siblings in the Claremont Street / Claremont Place area of Plymouth. By 1881 he was working as a plasterer.

In 1883, aged 24, William married Sarah Ann Cloutman. They do not appear to have had any children, and by 1891 Sarah was living alone in Plymouth, whilst William has not been found in that year's census.

William's father died in 1884, and his mother died in 1894.

Clearly William and Sarah separated, as in 1898 William married again to a widow called Jane Ann Quick, formerly Smith. Sarah remarried the same year, claiming to be a widow. She later moved to Grimsby.

Jane had a daughter named Lilian who was a couple of years old when William and Jane married - it is possible that Lilian may have been William's daughter. William and Jane went on to have another two children together: a son also named William Richard Harry in 1899 then a daughter named Louisa Kate (after William's sister) in 1901. The 1901 census, taken just before Louisa was born, finds William, Jane, Lilian and young William living in two rooms at 12 Chedworth Street in Plymouth. William was still working as a plasterer. Lilian had adopted William's surname, appearing as Lilian Harry, rather than Lilian Quick. Ten years later the 1911 census similarly finds the family living in two rooms at 21 Nelson Street.

William died in 1916, aged 56. Jane survived him by five years.
