Death and Burial

William Harper's death is listed on his pension card as 26 November 1928 in Sandusky, Ohio. The only William Harper recorded as dying on that date in Ohio died in the Ohio Soldiers Home in Erie County (which is where Sandusky is). The year of birth (1842) agrees with the information in the Official Roster. However, the death certificate lists William Harper as "negro." It is possible that he passed as white to join the unit. More investigation needs to be done to determine if this is indeed the William Harper who served in Company B.

The death certificate indicates that he was buried in Oakland Cemetery. However, there are at least nine Oakland Cemeteries in Ohio. A search of the database of the Oakland Cemetery in Erie County found no William Harper.
