William H. Gifford served four years as a Massachusetts State Representative (1909 ~ 1912) from the 9th Bristol District. During his time at the State House, he served on the Fisheries & Game Committee and the Ways and Means Committee. ~~Obituary ~~ William H. Gifford Dead Former Representative of 9th Bristol District Was Former Postmaster at Westport Point (Fall River, July 19) -- William H. Gifford, former representative from the 9th Bristol District, died today at his home at Westport Point. He was 65 years old and one of a family of eight children, of whom two survive. Mr. Gifford served four terms in the House of Representatives as a Democrat --- 1909, 1910, 1911 and 1912. He served as postmaster at Westport Point for seven years under the Cleveland administration. Known as "Pop" Gifford, no other representative upon retiring from the house had a better, cleaner or more creditable record. He was born in Dartmouth. For 30 years he conducted a grocery store at Westport Point. He leaves a sister Isabel Gifford of Dartmouth and a brother John Gifford of Horseneck Beach. The funeral will take place from Westport Point, but the arrangements are incomplete. As published in the Boston Globe, July 1916 References
