The 1860 Census for Ross Co., OH in the Union Township taken on 11th July 1860 shows the age of William at age 22. William was in the 89th Regiment of the OH Volunteer Infantry and was mustered in at Camp Dennison, OH on the 26th of August in 1862. William held the rank of Private in Company K. On the 3rd of September the regiment was sent to Covington, Kentucky for its first engagement. The regiment participated in the grand review at Washington DC on the 24th of May in 1865 and was mustered out of the service on the 7th of June in 1865 and returned home on the 13th of June in 1865.
