William Erwin One of the early families to settle in the Sulphur Well area was the William Erwin family. He came from Ireland in 1804 and is listed on the recors of Little Barren Baptist Church with his family on their 1815 membership list. He was maried to Suzannah Curry and they had 9 children. Their family records are as follows William Erwin Sr 1764 married Suzannah Curry 1762 and there children are James Erwin 1787 William Jr 1789 Robert 1791 Suzannah 1793 Nancy 1795 Elizabeth 1798 John 1801 Rebecca 1805 and Alexander 1807 William Erwin was a Herb doctor and helped out this early settlement with his skills Since then the next 5 geneartions of Erwins have all settled within a few miles of Sulphur Well and many relatives live here now. There are variations on the spelling of Erwin and one may now see it seplled Erwin Ervin Irwin or Irvin but records indicate they all have a common ancester in William Erwen Sr stories relate the name spelling changes broke out about the time of the civil war. when brothers decided to spell there names differently and it doesnt take much imagination to see why the strong emotions and varying ideas in the tumultous time could cause family diagareement for anyone interested of the six geneartions of William Erwin Sr are on file in the Green County library.
