William Alfred Edwards was born in 1882 in Monticello, Jasper County Georgia. The identity of his father is uncertain, but some suggest that he was William Thomas McCowan. This is unproven, but YDNA test results of WAE's descendants show him to be a close match with members of the Francis McCowan Group of the Cowan YDNA project. Numerous ancestry Public Member trees for WTM trace descent back to Person:Duncan McGeehon (1) who is thought to have been born in Pennsylvania prior to 1750. SOme of his descendants used the McCowan spelling of the surname. Person:Francis McCown (3), for whom the YDNA subgroup is named, is documented as importing to America from Ireland prior to 1740, when he appears in Orange/Augusta County Virginia. It is likely that he imported through Philadelphia about the same time as the McGeehon's settled in that area. A plausible, but entirely unrpoven explanation, of WAE's family history is that Francis (3) came to America in the company with other family members. These other, currently unidentified kinsmen remained in Pennsylvania and gave rise to Duncan's lineage. Additional work is needed to evaluate this possibility.
