William Henry Drake was baptised on 28th May 1840 at Bere Ferrers in Devon, son of Celia Drake. He appears in the 1841 census living with his grandfather John Drake in Bere Ferrers. In 1844 William's mother married Alfred Hatherley, who thus became his stepfather. The 1851 census finds William living with his mother, stepfather and younger siblings in St Buedeaux. He is listed as William Hatherley, using his stepfather's surname.

William's mother died in 1860. The 1861 census finds him boarding in Stonehouse near Plymouth. He was married at Stonehouse on 26th December 1863 to Sarah Elms Shaftain, who was originally from St Ives in Cornwall. They appear to have had five children together, and alternated beween living in Stonehouse and Plymouth.

William appears to have died in either 1901 or 1911 in Plymouth - there are two plausible deaths in the index either of which could be him. Sarah outlived him and appears living alone in the 1911 census.
